In 1992 I took a “junior’s abroad” class trip to study “The British Literary Landscape.” We
visited Shakespeare’s Stratford-on-Avon and Wordsworth’s Lake District. In Canterbury, the acerbic
evangelical history professor warned us, “Don’t venture inside the New Age boutiques. This is no longer
