Welcome to the official website of the United Haiku and Tanka Society.

Formed in 2013, the UHTS is an international compatible haiku, tanka, and related forms society. Our mission is to cultivate insight and comprehension through the reading and writing of these genres in both English, and global native languages.

The United Haiku and Tanka Society’s philosophy is to maintain an all-in-one online publication that is simple to access globally and is unencumbered by special software needs, membership expense, rigid corporate structure, peer politics, or any one person monopoly. Hence, we are non-political, non-religious, non-corporate, non-aligned, non-funded, and non-affiliated “specifically” in order to avoid any manner of prejudice, impoliteness, or lack of access.

Membership is open to anyone interested in haiku/tanka-related forms, and their mixed-media art counterparts. We offer unlimited international exposure (not just in your own country), polite interface with officers and editors, poetic fellowship and camaraderie among peers.

To join us, simply click on the membership tab and follow the directions.

The UHTS publishes its bi-annual journal cattails, in April and October. Submission guidelines can be found on the Submissions to cattails web page and at the cattails website

Three annual Contests are sponsored by the UHTS: the “aha” Haiku/Senryu Contest (the Annual Hortensia Anderson Memorial Awards), the (“Fleeting Words” Tanka Competition), and the (“Samurai” Haibun Competition). More information and submission guidelines can be found by clicking on the Contests tab.
